Giveaway: Finders by Melissa Scott

On December 10, 2018, Candlemark & Gleam will release Melissa Scott’s mythic space opera Finders, an extension of her stories “Finders” (in The Other Half of the Sky, 2013) and “Firstborn, Lastborn” (in To Shape the Dark, 2016). Both stories were reprinted in the Year’s Best SF compilations of Gardner Dozois, and form the nucleus of Finders which is the first of a projected trilogy.

Finders is a seamless fusion of adventure, myth and science-as-advanced-as-magic—an original retelling of Prometheus, Pandora and the Titans set in a fully imagined universe with vividly delineated protagonists. Publishers Weekly had high praise for Finders, which boasts a haunting cover by Eleni Tsami whose stunning work has graced previous Candlemark efforts (click twice on the images to embiggen).

Melissa really needs no introduction, she’s among the brightest stars in the firmament of SF. With a PhD in history from Brandeis, she has published more than thirty original novels and several short stories, most with queer themes and characters. She is known for her expansive and effective world-building, has won a slew of awards, and has been a pioneering forerunner in many trends that went on to become foundational in SF.

Because GoodReads giveaways are no longer free and our coffers are of the usual size for indie micro-presses, we will be doing a direct giveaway for Finders. You can enter it by leaving a comment to this post or by sending an email (with subject line “Finders Giveaway”) to our website address. Please rest assured that your email will only be visible to the site admin. The giveaway will run from November 9 to December 10, and random winners will be picked to receive a maximum of three print copies of the novel. For up to 200 requests, there will be one award copy. For up to 400 requests, two copies; and beyond that, three copies. We will contact the winners to request addresses when the giveaway is completed.

We can hardly wait to share this remarkable work with the world. Keep fingers on tractor beam buttons!

Note added on December 11: the giveaway is now closed.  We’ll pick winners and contact them within this week.

I’ve never read a space opera novel. I’ve read and watched Sci-fi material, but never in the opera genre. The name itself never sounded appealing. However, I had a professor for my creative writing workshop who writes space opera and her stories always sounded interesting. I just never had the money to buy her books. The story in the giveaway sounds intriguing, I hope to be able to check it out.

I am definitely interested. Though I notice that there is currently, it seems, no way to preorder FINDERS: as someone who’s a Melissa Scott fan, I think it would be really great if preorder links existed at the usual online/ebook outlets?
