Giveaway: Retellings of the Inland Seas

On June 23, 2020, Candlemark & Gleam will release Retellings of the Inland Seas, the latest member of the Feral Astrogators family. Its older siblings are The Other Half of the Sky (2013) and To Shape the Dark (2016), both of which won avalanches of accolades and awards. Inland Seas itself already got glowing reviews in Booklist and Nerds of a Feather.

Retellings of the Inland Seas re-imagines Mediterranean and Black Sea stories in SFF contexts: from a Minoan exodus through wormholes to Furies on Mars, from space Argonauts to Imazighen and Scythian warrior queens. The story collection Fates and Furies by Christine Lucas is the boon companion of Inland Seas. The stunning cover is by Eleni Tsami, whose work has graced many Candlemark books, from the Feral Astrogators series to Melissa Scott’s Finders.

As a reminder here’s the TOC of Inland Seas. Most gratifying is that, with no urging from me, each contributor chose a distinct tale to transmute:

Distant Campfires, Eternal Beacons – Athena Andreadis (introduction)
The Wine-Dark Sea — A. M. Tuomala
Sirens — Melissa Scott
Hide and Seek — Shariann Lewitt
The Sea of Stars — Genevieve Williams
Between the Rivers — Judith Tarr
Calando — James L. Cambias
One Box too Many — Christine Lucas
The Fury of Mars — F. J. Doucet
Out of Tauris — Alexander Jablokov
Little Bird — Kelly Jennings
Wings — Elana Gomel
The Crack at the Border — Dimitra Nikolaidou
Unearthing Uncle Bud — Athena Andreadis

Because GoodReads giveaways are no longer free and our coffers are of the usual size for indie micro-presses, we’re doing a direct giveaway for Retellings of the Inland Seas. You can enter it by leaving a comment to this post or by sending an email (with subject line “Inland Seas Giveaway”) to our website address. Please rest assured that your email will only be visible to the site admin. There was a issue with commenting a while ago that I’m near-certain has been resolved, but if you bump into it, please do send an email!

The giveaway will run from May 26 to June 23, and random winners will be picked to receive copies of the work. For up to 200 requests, there will be one award copy. For up to 400 requests, two copies; and beyond that, three copies. Because the pandemic has caused significant shipping delays, this giveaway will only award digital copies (it will include the PDF that contains all the print flourishes). We’ll contact the winners to request addresses when the giveaway is completed.

We can hardly wait to share this remarkable mythic work with the world, and (re)link future and past.

Note added on June 22, 11:55 pm EST: the giveaway is now closed.  We’ll pick winners and contact them within a week.
