Reading, then editing…reading, then editing…it’s a neverending cycle!

A red pen and marked-up page of text

Pressing Matters: Week of August 12-16, 2013

Acquisitions

  1. Did you see? Did you see? We finally got to announce that mysterious epic YA fantasy we’ve been hinting about! Amy Bai’s Sword will be coming out in 2014!
  2. Now it’s time to get back into the slush pile…

Editing

  1. Speaking of Sword, we just returned edits on the manuscript to Amy, and she did NOT, in fact, either keel over or attempt to put a contract out on Mastermind Kate for all the changes and notes and snarky margin comments. She even started making some of her own. It’s an epic lamaze class up in here!

Production

  1. Illustrations for City of Devils are underway, and will be AMAZING. Yes, you read that right. Illustrations. The book will have illustrations.
  2. Text design in the works for Infinity Key.
  3. Proofreading continues on II Crimsonstreak.
  4. Typographer Extraordinaire Alan instantly identified the fonts used in the first two books of the Resurgam series, which means we can now get to work on laying out Grave!

Reviews, Promotions, and Buzz

  1. Did you miss out on meeting Justin Robinson at Scare LA last weekend? Never fear…he was caught on camera – and video! – at the event!
  2. Also, dang, where does that man get his book racks? WE need some of those.
  3. Loving the video games, hating the ending: a review of Constellation Games.
  4. David Colby recently appeared at the Sunnyvale book festival, and was caught on camera doing an interview!
  5. Can’t get enough of Susan Jane Bigelow’s Extrahumans? Good news, everyone! She’s collected the various bonus stories she’s released as the novels have launched into a low-priced eBook!

Sundries

  1. Congratulations to Engima Bookstore in Astoria, Queens on its grand opening! We love to see indie bookstores thrive, and even more so when they’re sf/f specialists! We’re hoping to get some C&G authors in for events soon…stay tuned!
  2. Shakespeare’s terrible handwriting may, in fact, have proven to be the basis of identifying a play he collaborated on. Makes me feel a little less bad about my own lousy penmanship.
  3. Wow, this is trippy. “Lightrails” installation in Alabama – gorgeous and a little eye-searing…
  4. According to Google, “literally” now means exactly the opposite. Gorramit, I’m a descriptivist and this still frosts my cake (yes, I know they’re just documenting popular usage, but that doesn’t mean I have to LIKE it, people). I’m literally going to go sniffle into my tea for a little while.
  5. Actually, I may need therapy llamas to help me cope.
  6. Royalty checks are now in the mail. Hooray! Now…to get the accounting system working smoothly again before the next batch. Ah, the joys of being a small press…
  7. To cope with THAT, it’s pony time.
