Pressing Matters: Week of April 1-5, 2013

Editing

  1. Author Joan Frances Turner just turned in revisions on Grave, the final installment of her Resurgam Trilogy. Can’t WAIT to dig in and see what she’s done with it!
  2. Supplemental materials are always fun, and we got goodies from both Justin Robinson AND Susan Jane Bigelow this week! Glee!
  3. Continuing edits for Infinity Key by Chrysoula Tzavelas and II Crimsonstreak by Matt Adams.

Production

  1. Editor Athena Andreadis likes the glossy cover on The Other Half of the Sky, and so this week, we approved the proof and set the presses in motion…and author copies are on their way to the C&G Lair as we speak!
  2. We’re going through the eBook versions of Other Half one more time, just to make sure everything’s in working order.
  3. Talking with talented illustrator and artist Brooke Stephenson about the cover for II Crimsonstreak – and she’s already got some AMAZING ideas to riff on her design for I, Crimsonstreak as well as taking into account the author’s mockup. Yes, the author made a cover mockup. Yes, we loved it and we’re actually using it as the basis of the novel’s cover. See why small press rocks?

Reviews, Promotions, and Buzz

  1. Two Moms Read loved Matchbox Girls by Chrysoula Tzavelas! Strong female characters, just the right amount of ambiguity…they declared this a read-again!
  2. Mark your calendars for May 11 – Justin Robinson just confirmed that he’ll be in Artist Alley at Long Beach Comic Con! Stop by and keep him company, lest he do something drastic like tap-dancing on his table…

Sundries

  1. I THINK we’ve finally got the eBook download glitch straightened out. It’s working for us, but we still need to confirm with an actual outside buyer who’s not using a test gateway or anything. Ahhh, technology.
  2. Royalties and accounting work this weekend. Soon, the checks go out!
  3. Reading slush, too. We have a lot of new submissions to go over, and several fulls that still have to get close reads.
  4. We’ll be digging into the slush pile over the weekend. Brace those red pens!
  5. We absolutely love this letter from Gibson’s Bookstore in New Hampshire in the wake of the “Goodreads bought by Amazon” thing. “When we remember what you like, it’s in service of a personal relationship. It’s not ‘data’ to ‘exploit.’ This is a profession with professional standards.”

It’s awesome that you listen to author ideas for covers! Have fun reading through the slush pile – hope you find some neat stuff.

  2. Candlemark & Gleam

Authors usually have at least SOME idea of what they’d love to see on the cover of their novel – and what they’d hate to see there. I try to get an idea of covers they love and hate, ideas and general concepts, etc. It’s not often you get a full mockup, like Matt gave us for the Crimsonstreak books, or that you get a full-done cover like Natania Barron arranged with Brigid Ashwood for /Pilgrim of the Sky/, but it makes sense that the author has a vision for the cover, and we like to respect that and work with it as much as possible!
